What we allowed to happen to kids during covid, to close in person schooling (and require kids to mask up when outside, don’t get me started) should never Never be allowed again. And when we have the covid reckoning that needs to happen, let’s remember that kids are the future of the world, and we are responsible for protecting their best interests and not buy into ridiculous fears over thoughtful analysis EVER AGAIN.
I agree with you on this, but wondering what kind of policy could be suggested to correct it? In my area there were strong efforts at the local (county) level to keep schools open, but they had to close under threat of losing state and federal money.
I believe they were required to follow governor’s orders (state level) even after Federal mandates ended. At this time it has been common practice for top-down structure for guidance, so the only way around it would be to return decision powers to the local/ county level. Personally, I am in support of this because counties have very different demographics and a one size fits all structure does not work well.
Good thoughts. Would need to be deferred to local decision making with parents involved. In the case of covid, much interference was allowed from the teachers’ union, which even after a vaccine was unwilling to return to in person teaching. And the federal agencies such as the CDC were also grossly involved. If the priorities are actually the children, as well as the parents of those kids being in the decision making circles, I do not believe things would have gone down as they did. Even with the outrageous propaganda fear program perpetrated by the media and pharma, I saw that most people wanted kids to go to school, as they did in Sweden where not a single teacher died or even became seriously ill by remaining open. Let’s look at the evidence next time and decide accordingly.
