Every person who votes needs to have a Photo voter card that is issued by the federal government, but proof of citizenship would be built into the process of obtaining the card. The picture would have to be updated every 10-12 years. This card should be free to obtain, and can never be electronic. The federal government can use the same offices that currently handle passport processing to facilitate this, or can force states to use their DMV’s to do this as well.
To be clear, this is different than showing ID in order to vote, as every state has taken it upon themselves to give licenses to people who are not citizens, and that currently counts as showing ID to vote.
There would also be a requirement to show this ID at the polling station across all 50 states (for federal elections), or show up with 6 points for proof of citzenship.
Honestly, no. It gives TOO MUCH power to the Federal Government. I vote for a need to show good identification before voting in a national election, but a single voter ID gives too much power to the Fed. The idea SHOULD be to REMOVE power from the Federal Government!
@Keysboy , I appreciate this comment. Getting to the same end by a differnt means is all I care about. I wonder how we would maintain some form of uniformity if it’s not in the hands of a well run federal agency. If not, wouldn’t we get things like California and Pennsylvania doing automatic voter registration of non-citizens? Maybe it doesn’t have to be the Federal Goverment, but I don’t trust each state to comply with “good identification”. Florida and Texas, yes…but the Commies in control of Illinois, NY, and California…No!
With Real ID, someone would still be responsible for maintaining it. Practically speaking, it would make sense to have a federal agency to do it, but the desired outcome would be similar to what they do in India.
As far as I am aware, they force all citizens to have their voter record/profile tied to their birth certificate, health ID, or some other proof of citizenship. The administration of hte ID woudl have to be Federal…but with that comes transparency via FOIA requests to have oversight.
This makes sense to do if we care about election integrity, but I’m open to suggestions.
RFKjr spoke about Passport cards. I suggest every child born a USCitizen is issued a FREE legitimate Passport. For International Travel and Voting. Simple, dual purpose, controlled, official, DONE!
No barriers folks, it’s free and either do it or don’t, travel or vote. Blahhhhhhh Blahhhhh Blahhhh Blah…
Why not just require a US passport then! Seems since we already have the process in place it’s a bit more responsible then asking everyone to go and get yet another I.D. To carry around.
Getting a passport costs money for people, so it is possible that some will claim voter suppression. If we made passports free to obtain, then we have a great system to make illegal voting hard.
I assume we would need adsitional staff for abperiod of time to process the requests, bit ultimately, I think it would work!!
