Military Leave Accounting

Can the discussion be made to not charge military personnel days of leave on their off days or weekends? I can think of no other government agency or private agency that charges their people personal time off days on their off days or weekends. And if they head out on a Friday night and start leave on Monday they are running the risk of being awol or usmj infraction. It’s about time to revisit this policy.

looks like you confuse an ever-ready (military) with “a government employee” (a city-hall receptionist) here…

Perhaps you misunderstand or I didn’t make it clear. I’m saying that a servicemen puts in for leave and it is approved, just like today, they request 17 days off and it’s approved. They check out on leave, and check in from leave, just like today, their command has allowed them to go home. When they get back to the command, 12 of the days were work days, the other were weekends and perhaps a holiday. So they are charged 12 days of leave, the other 5 they were not expected to work, and the base already knew they would not be available to call back to the base because the leave was approved.

I do see what you are saying, but as a former soldier with 20 years in the army, we are soldiers 24/7, not civilians with weekends off. May times I have been called in on weekends to do stuff for the unit or in general recall. If you are taking leave the Government needs to know that you are officially gone even on the weekends. As irritating as it is burning up leave on weekends or “days off” it is an accountability issue. What I would tell my soldiers if they want weekends off, get out of the army and become a civilian.
