Many combat veterans do not voluntarily enroll in Veterans Affairs following deployment or post time in service. This might be due to pride, VA reputation, or because Soldiers initially “feel fine” upon returning home. I believe it should be mandatory for Soldiers to establish initial care following a deployment, but at a bare minimum, after active duty service during ACAP (this would apply to guard/reserve during post-mobilization). Too many vets admit they wish they would’ve applied for disability or at least established care to prevent lingering injuries or depression. Real problems occur years after service, when the VA won’t entertain claims years after the fact.
