Many people speak about having mandatory paid maternity leave but forget to add paid paternity leave as well. Many people say that having mandatory paid maternity leave (assuming that this is paid out by companies) would make companies not hire women which would be a huge issue. But I propose that we have 12 weeks of mandatory paid maternity AND paternity. With it being the exact amount of time no matter if you are the man or woman in the relationship, once you have a child you will be getting 12 weeks paid off. This allows for both parents to bond with their newborn but also for the man to take care of the woman so that the woman can take care of the baby.
There should also be a certain amount of time given off for those who adopt, are a partner in a homosexual relationship, etc
I would extend past 12 weeks. More like 9 months to1 year.
Recovery, care, and connection are all key things not only for the baby but your partner as you touched on. Base should be the amount of time taken to carry the child.
Yeah that would be the dream! But I think very unlikely in the country we live in. I think 12 weeks would work really well if companies are the ones having to pay for the leave. If it was the government paying for the leave then I could definitely see it being longer then 12 weeks, if the government controls their spending.
Yes unfortunately due to the mindset that the older executive generation has with this in the U.S. longer than company paid 12 weeks would get quite the pushback. I think the U.S. needs to take a more European structure to maternal & paternal leave with a regulation of longer paternal & maternal leave and make the companies adhere to it regardless of if they like it. The biggest problem that the US has is the lobbying by corporations which leads to government looking out for the entity over the individual.
