Once you reach the age of, should we say, 65, everyone at that age range should be mandated to retake their drivers test to make sure they are safe on the road for themselves, and others drivers.
Not all seniors are on medications which is why they have mental and physical impairments and dementia. We should all be tested and given help to repair the damage that big pharma created.
Big pharma is not the topic of this discussion although I do agree we all need to work together to fix the issues big pharma has caused, and continues to cause (please see my other post where I am advocating for alternative medicine).
My point to this topic is, those of the older generations should have to retake their drivers test every few years and I would not be opposed to everyone retaking their drivers test every few years, either.
If those of the senior population had to retake their drivers test every few years this would not only keep them safe, but other drivers on the road safe. It would also prevent the heartbreaking discussion where children/grandchildren decide it is time for them to put the keys away.
However, those who have reached older age, do have more health ailments that could make them risky on the road, such as sight issues.
Also, to add: Dementia is not a normal part of aging. Please do not assume that most seniors have dementia because this is simply untrue.
I believe mandating a discriminatory test based on age is wrong. When you have the name “just a girl” it is perceived you are way younger than 40. Have there been accidents caused by 90 yr olds? Yes. I have also known of people 90 yrs ( a couple out for an anniversary dinner) that died in a car crash by a “young driver” under 20. My sister was killed in a car crash at 23, newly pregnant, by a 16 yr old high on drugs. Please understand all sides of this. Our world has gone away from blasting bad stuff at “older” citizens.
Issuing of drivers lic. is not an enumerated power therefore no federal action should be considered. Besides, there are lots of other things besides age that make for lousy drivers like eating , texting, reading, putting on makeup and all sorts of other distracted driving activities.

Statins break down the lining of the brain. It is cholestral that makes that lining surrounding the brain and cholesteral is needed for the bones as well. I know driving is something we don’t want to give up but the dementia is a hazard for anyone driving. Not all have dementia I care for a man who is 87 and 6 months ago he told me he needed to sell his car and give up driving. I praised him for making the decision as he is safer and I take him where he needs to go but I make it fun by driving out in the country and sight see or go to the ice cream parlor. He has dementia.
Everyone, upon getting their first driver’s license, should be made to take their driver’s test every 5 years. Believe it or not, things change in the driver’s environment that affect every driver.
1. Changing to roundabouts.
2. Auto technology on the road.
3. Personal technology in the car.
4. Gravel road vs highway.
5. Country roads vs city roads.
You can worry about an elderly person’s reflex in a blanket statement, yet, how about a young driver’s drive to take risks, get there faster, have a good time outrunning the car next to them, and horsing with distractions in the car? Any concerns you have about strictly about people over 65, are matched for concerns for drivers of all ages. I find your policy idea discriminatory.
Insurance premiums are higher for younger rather than older for a reason. I’m assuming that the internet and insurance companies have a far better insight than I do, that’s what their statistics show. Sure there are many seniors that shouldn’t be driving, but same goes for other age groups. So where do we draw the line? Just because you are a senior doesn’t mean you don’t get tested, they have the same requirements as younger citizens.
Is there a reason that the age of 65 would be of concern for driving? It’s my opinion that a regulation to mandate could set up grounds for more government interference in our lives which we are seeking to free ourselves from and would tread on our sovereignty.
Hello: I’m 72 and will agree a drivers test should be part of gaining a Drivers license. A first time drivers test should include controlling an automobile at 70 Mph in a forced skid situation, control under maximum braking on a wet surface, high speed 45, 55, 65, 75 Mph simulation missing an object in your lain and stopping before hitting another object in the lain you had to use to avoid the first object. To get a drivers license you should be able to control an automible. This test could be conducted every 10 years or so.
Why 65 and not 55? Or 45? Why only driving test and not an IQ, comprehension and memory tests? Where you in rush and couldn’t pass a 70-year old lady driving at a speed limit on a one-way one-lane road?
Young, and younger than 65 year-olds, do a lot worse and more dangerous things on the roads - what tests are you going to recommend for them to retake and after what trigger-events?
What tests should be given to a 35-year old who blinded the oncoming 65-year old with a shop light installed on a raised pickup truck?
Blanket discrimination of a group never works. And quite frankly, illegal for a good reason.
BUT, if you want to have elders tested, by all means - a lot of countries do that, TO ALL drivers: they mandate bi-annual medical testing for all in order to renew their driving privilege…
