An essential piece to Making America Great Again is starting from the beginning of life. Having babies is difficult on everyone including mothers, children, and the companies that have an absent employee during the postpartum period.
Companies should be rewarded when their employees take a full maternity leave. Too often women are pressured to return to work too early which as a damaging impact on the mother and infant.
Additionally, women should also receive many types of assistance while on maternity leave.
Assistance could include-
A care package- Finland already does this. It provides supplies to the mother to care for her baby after birth, the box even doubles as a bed for when baby arrives
A nurse/housekeeper visit the home- After your baby is born you are expected to go to the pediatrician for your babies first doctor visit. Many women have had c-sections and have been instructed not to lift and can barely move around. Why are the docs not traveling to us? This would also help the doctor check on the mother and her mental health. Furthermore having someone come to the house and do light housework would help with the mothers stress and well being. Financial compensation for the duration of maternity leave- Very few people can afford to take maternity leave and are back to work in as little as two weeks, this is insane.
We have a lot of improvement to make when it comes to supporting women postpartum.
