Make GLP-1 Semaglutides affordable for everyone

The U.S is facing record numbers of obesity. Newer weightloss treatment options like GLP-1 injectables, semaglutides from brands like Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound. Have been proven to result in significant weightloss which can be life changing to so many people who have struggled with obesity and other health complications. But, for many Americans who cannot afford healthcare these treatments are not even an option as without insurance coverage that is hard to obtain, the out of pocket for GLP-1 monthly can be thousands of dollars. We need to make this an affordable treatment in the U.S just like in other countries where you can get these much cheaper. Why should Americans pay a special premium for the same products. Make them affordable!

As a women who has suffered with PCOS for over 20 years I am blessed to have access to a GLP1 through m insurance for 2 years. There is no approved treatment for PCOS and all products are used off label resulting in constant struggles for those of us that suffer with the condition. When I was originally diagnosed I weighed less than 130 pounds. None of the treatments I have completed in the 20 years since my diagnosis has worked in the way Zepbound has.

I also have PCOS and there are no approved treatments or medications for this disease. My Doctor prescribed Mounjaro but my insurance denied it because I don’t have type 2, and out of pocket for me is $1,234. When in other countries it’s less than $100. I have been taking compounded Tirzepatide for the last two months and have lost 22 pounds. This medication has saved my life. I have tried every diet and have exercised till I’m blue in the face and nothing has worked until now. I have a serious issue with these insurance companies getting in the way with what our physician is prescribing us because we need it, but they are the ones with the last say and it’s all because we can’t afford it and because they say we don’t need it, but our Doctor says other wise. Please help with this!

I began this journey back in November 2023. My doctor wanted to put me on a GLP-1 medication as I was pre diabetic, hypertensive, high blood pressure, PCOS and weighed 327 lbs. I had every test ran and was told while in a calorie deficit to eat less and work out more. That’s pretty hard to do at 300 + lbs. While traditional insurance would not cover the GLP-1 medications I was able to utilize a compounding pharmacy in Ohio. Over this year while my weight has decreased my dosage has gone up which subsequently has increased the price of the 4 weekly injections. My health has benefited exponentially from this medication and it should be cost effective for all Americans in need. 400-1600$ per month is not easily accessible for most with the costs of everything else. Let’s make this affordable across the board & remove the pharmaceutical and insurance red tape to allow everyday Americans access to this medication as needed.
