Limit Foreign Ownership Of Land To Homestead Only.

No land shall be owned by non-citizens with the exception of the house, buildings, and land directly occupied by the non-citizen.

This Homestead Exception, rather than an outright ban, allows people migrating to the country to invest themselves into a community as part of the assimilation and naturalization process.

Commercial property ought to be linked to local homestead property, for both citizens and non-citizens, as an extension of the homesteaded land.

No more stripping away the economic value of land with no accounting for the other forms of value those properties represent to the communities they physically exist in and the larger political bodies those properties interact with.

No more China buying US farms, no more Blackrock buying US neighborhoods.

I like where you are trying to go with this. The word “homestead” can be interpreted differently based on different state’s laws, so I am wondering if there is a more detailed interpretation?

Yes, the term would need to be replaced with explicit language when rendered in legislation.

Something along the lines of:

“Owned and occupied by the same party, functioning as primary legal residence.”

Many countries do not allow non citizens to own land in their country… I agree it is a worry that we have left a great vulnerability in allowing the buying up of our land/farm land… but I have a question…hoping I understood what you meant about homestead allowance… what if a foreign national buys a huge chunk of land with a home on it and claims homestead exemption and or possibly does so acting without our knowledge for their government? If this was done in mass could they get around the intent of your proposal? Should there be a limit on the size of the land? Should there be a limit on the number of citizens from any country that can own property here? I read your whole proposal but I don’t understand what you mean about commercial property being linked to homestead property if you could please help me to understand… Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

Can we add to limit US corporations from buying up available properties per state? With a stipulation that they cannot branch out with smaller companies to buy up more? My area is building entire rental neighborhoods owned by corporations.
