Increase the # of House Representatives (<50,000 citizens : 1 House Rep)

TL;DR - Increase the size of the House of Reps to be less than 50,000 : 1 (<50k citizens for each representative).

The most number of people you can feasibly meet and remember is like 10k (somebody source this). Everyone should be able to know their House Representative personally (and vice versa!) and be able to call/write them directly & even meet with them. Currently each House Representative represents an average of 700,000 people. That’s too many.

It should be easier for local individuals to express their concerns to their government official, and easier for each House Rep to know who they are actually representing. This would reduce the power of any individual in the House (reduce self-dealing & corruption incentives), and allow for greater representation of the people.

When the country was founded the ratio was closer to 45,000 : 1. While we have slightly increased the size of the house (10x), the population has increased by significantly more (100x). We should return to a ratio that better represents the constituency. These people do not need to live in DC all year, we have wonderful new technology that can allow people to serve their country as an elected government official while also contributing to their local area as a citizen (maybe even work a normal job too!).

The congressional district mapping is too chucky and is too easily taken advantage of. If we make more of them, and make them smaller, we can give the people more control over their government.

Article: U.S. population keeps growing, but House of Representatives is same size as in Taft era"

Credit to my father who has been pitching me this idea since I was a kid.

Completely agree with your reasoning! I’d add that uncapping the House of Representatives from its set number of 435 reps would also drastically change the dynamic of presidential elections, as the electoral college would likewise be increased. To what effect this would have, I am not sure.
