The Maximum current tax deduction for college related expenses is $4000. That barely covers the meal plan at most colleges. Parents and students that are trying to pay for education to avoid graduating with an exorbitant amount of debt should be able to deduct the FULL amount of tuition based on what the average in-state or out-of-state tuition is for the state that their child is attending college in. Make it applicable to only one full deduction per student, and max it out at the average state school tuition cost. Income earned and used for education should be tax-free. Hard stop.
