People who are receiving government assistance such as food stamps often are not incentivised to work because the rules try to keep people from “double dipping” by making an income AND receiving those benefits. For most people, this results in never getting off gov assistance and remaining in poverty. The incentivization to work and contribute to one’s own success should be promoted by requiring able bodied recipients to work a minimum of 30 hrs per week at whatever job they choose, even if their income pushes them above the income limits to receive benefits. The income level for receiving benefits should be markedly raised in order for all people to have a livable income and the assistance they need. Receiving assistance without working under the guise of “still looking for a job” should not be allowed beyond a short time. Gov assistance can be curtailed after one achieves a livable wage and required work hours over a defined period of time.
