Incentives regarding Mariners / Merchant Marine

The United States Merchant Marine has been declining since 1945. Merchant mariners play a crucial role in the transportation sector and aid military at times of war. Investing in our maritime industry will ensure less dependency on foreign sailors during times of peace and war. Tax incentives for mariners who work away from home (eliminate income tax for US Merchant Marine) would promote growth and development of the merchant marine. In addition, greater tax incentives for shipyards and ship/towboat builders would mean companies could grow their fleets at greater capacities. A strong merchant marine makes for a strong, lucrative, and secure country. Further investing into the Inter-coastal waterway, in areas that need attention, would result in efficient intermodal transportation and economic growth.

Here! Here! Our US Flag fleet has diminished significantly. By investing in a revival of US shipping, we could rebuild an industry that has huge benefits to the country. The opportunities for job growth to support ship building, mariners, and the overall infrastructure of our ports are huge. Not to mention, we need a global presence of a US fleet for our own import/export security and supply support of our military. KP ‘93 Acta non Verba
