IDEA is outdated and needs to be reevaluated. It doesn’t protect children with rare disorders. It allows the public school system to provide as little as possible in terms of resources and supports. Professionals in the education setting do not need to have a professional license or certificate to evaluate, identify or create behavior intervention plans or care for a special needs child in the school setting. This is troublesome when a child has rare disorders and are met with non-stop roadblocks.
IDEA enables school districts to identify what they feel is necessary for FAPE, and does not provide any minimal requirements or required guidelines or rules.
