Many residents I have seen needing IV antibiotics are admitted to the nursing home only for the antibiotics to be administered there, rather than a home health nurse going to their home. The cost is significantly more with nursing home administration, the resident is taken out of their home environment where they are already acclimated to the bacteria in the environment and are more comfortable, especially when sick. Many of these individuals are able-bodied and prefer to be at home, but their insurance or cost coverage will not approve home administration and they find themselves admitted to the nursing home. Granted, some are really sick and cannot take care of themselves, but many are not
