With many work provided private health care policies women are provided yearly breast exams free of charge when they reach a certain age. The problem many women face is once they go for the exam the mammogram results come back flagged for further diagnostic testing. The next mammogram recommended is now diagnostic which is very costly under many plans. Women are then monitored twice a year for two years with ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram because the spot detected needs to be observed to see if it becomes cancerous and is monitored. This monitoring for me and many others is to the tune of $750 dollars twice a year for two years. After the two years of monitoring as long as it doesn’t turn into cancer you then qualify for your free mammogram again. Breast Cancer screening is extremely important. How many women out there cannot afford the 1500 dollars twice a year to get the monitoring they deserve. We find ourselves pushing back the appointments for a few months or even skipping these diagnostic mammograms due to affordability while putting our health at risk. If one mammogram per year is covered - all mammograms should be covered- not just the basic. We need serious healthcare reform. Many private policies out there are honestly junk. We have to have health insurance or else we face financial ruin should we have an emergency. We must do better with healthcare and this should be a top concern.
