I believe people who have DACA status should be given an opportunity to become citizens or at least permanent residents. There can be a list of qualifications
Qualification examples:
-Have lived in the US 10 years.
-No criminal record.
-Paid taxes for last 5 years
Some people have been living in the US so long they know nothing else. They have grown up, gone to college they work and pay taxes yet have no path to earn citizenship and are always living in fear of deportation to a country they don’t even know. They are land locked to the US fearing if they travel they can not return to the only life they know.
This program was never created properly to begin with and they live in limbo.
It’s not a reward it’s an opportunity to earn it like all other immigrants.
I am a naturalized citizen and did it the right way took me 12 years but I had a path. These people don’t have a path. That’s what I’m asking for
No one should benefit as a result of a crime. It sets a precedent that encourages more criminal behavior. The DACA are in the mess they are in because of their parents. The US isn’t obligated to give them any favors. Frankly, DACA need to pay back the US taxpayers for the services they stole. Every DACA in a college took the place of a US citizen.
If DACA are known then their entire families should be deported and fined. However, DACA should be allowed to file for citizenship like anyone else, despite the criminal behavior of their parents. I agree no criminal record, but DACA are criminal by default.
Don’t we give reprieves and second chances to kids in juvenile detention centers?
Why not give these kids/adults a path to redemption despite what their parents did? I’m not saying give it for free to everyone I’m saying set some criteria they have to meet like other immigrants.
Daca has no path to residency or citizenship currently…
I don’t think they took the place of US college kids.
But also you think they should pay back, ok maybe make that one of the criteria’s, they have to pay a fine. A lot of them are working adults and may gladly pay a fine if it guarantees them a path to legalization.
Also if you end the program all together that may discourage parents in the future from doing this. But the ones already stuck in this should be handled differently.
Children are not prosecuted when thier parents are committing crimes. If anything they are human trafficking victims! They were stolen out of thier country and moved across country borders.
No reward for breaking the law and children are not a reason for not punishing the law breakers. They should have considered their action and effect on thir children before committing the crime.
We are not responsible for their mistakes. These people are not children, they were and are adults. We are also not responsible for the children trafficked into our country. That to is the parents responsibility…
Maybe not a pleasant idea but you have to draw a line somewhere…
I don’t think you read what I proposed properly.
I didn’t say that we don’t punish parents bc of the kids. I’m well aware many parents make these decisions on purpose bringing kids in hopes that they can all stay.
We have people living in this country under the protection of DACA for 12 years. For some this country is all they know. For other people they have grown up gone to college and now work and pay taxes. These are the people I think we need to consider giving a path to some sort of legal status.
Again I didn’t say give it to them. I said give them a path, an opportunity. Every other type of immigrant has a legal path to permanent residency expect those with DACA status.
I agree with this 100%. To me, DACA is one of the easiest things to resolve. A path to citizenship has been ignored in all of the Sturm and Drang and made it possible for the left to use it as a talking point.
Fix it. Fix it quickly. Residency for whatever period of time you want to pick is fine and no criminal record is essential. If they’re willing to serve in the military for minimum of 3 to 5 years then at the end of that time they can finalize citizenship. If we end up with some type of Peace corps or service organization for the country and they’re willing to be employed as a civil servant and maintain work history, slap a minimum time on there and resolve citizenship when fulfilled.
There doesn’t have to be much else added to that. If they are employable and do not draw on benefits from the government and they’re more qualified than most the people I see on the street. This is an easy Bill to pass. Republicans can govern intelligently and Democrats can fall in line because it solves a problem they weren’t able to solve and will make them look really stupid if they vote it down.
The DACA “kids” are now in their late 30’s They had TEN years to file for citizenship and they STAYED Illegal. They need to be shipped out. They did not want to be a part of this country. Get Out.
You clearly don’t know anything about DACA…first of all they didn’t stay illegal, DACA is a status, and it is the only immigrant status with no path to citizenship. So some research
Pathway to citizenship, not citizenship and must be a significant net positive contributor, must peak annd write fluent English and no violent crimes or felonies ever.
