It should be required that forensically trained nurses perform forensic examinations, including sexual assault examinations (rape kits), DUI kits, domestic violence education and injury documentation, elder and child abuse examinations, etc.
Forensic nurses have skills that are only obtained through many, many hours of training that normal nurses do not have.
Additionally, police evidence technicians require additional training for their role to collect and document evidence, nurses who do the same should have similar skills and knowledge.
Currently, only Illinois requires sexual assault nurses to be on staff or in-house 24/7. Other states need to follow suit. Collection of evidence and clinical document can really influence how court proceedings play out and nurses without this skill set can do a lot of damage unintentionally and may affect the outcome of a trial.
