Food Stamp Reform

Food stamps should move to a WIC model. Vouchers are awarded for basic needs like fruit, veggies, meat, dairy, eggs, etc. this would eliminate unnecessary spending for junk food that doesn’t benefit the nutritional needs.

Food boxes from local farmers to be supported avoiding food loss and supporting our local economy.

Deposit items like cases of sodas or even water bottles should not be allowed for purchase.
Beverages in gallon containers (no deposit) should be allowed instead. Or WIC voucher idea would eliminate this. Example 2 cases of water per month limit.

Examples I or my family have actually seen working in grocery store:

Wedding cakes are purchased with food stamps.

Items with deposits (cases of soda or water) are purchased, dumped, and returned for can money for beer or cigarettes.

Food stamp cards are sold for drug money.

Premium steak and seafood are purchased

Deli items are purchased cold and reheated (this is a violation of current food stamp policy)

Hand baskets full of candy bars are purchased in single transactions

Extreme couponing while on food stamps to resell for profit

Some of what you mention is covered by fraud laws. Selling food stamps is illegal. The buying cases of soda to dump out for bottle returns could be handled by making the bottle deposits require cash. Buying baskets of candy bars sounds like someone reselling them for cash and profit and that’s fraud also, one that’s hard to prove but immoral none the less.

I can see how witnessing people scamming the system is upsetting. Worse, likely watching it going on for years and not being able to do anything about it.
But… sometimes you might not realize how many people go buy using food stamps as they were intended. The law-abiding people are invisible.

As someone who’s lived on food stamps most of my life trying to get by on my extremely meager disability benefit, I feel sorry for someone who needs to save up their food stamps to get a wedding cake. And envious that they managed it. I know when I got married, I made us a cake. We couldn’t have saved up enough food stamps for something like that because we needed them all to have something to eat. We had no honeymoon, no flowers, no wedding dress, no guests, no party. I wore a dress I already owned, we got 1 ring for less than 100$ and we walked to the church down the road and got married. Then we went home, had a slice of cake and that was that. I’m grateful we had the food stamps to get the flour and sugar for the cake, and the supper I made us later. But we weren’t exactly living the high life on food stamps.

I don’t know how people buy luxury food items with food stamps. One time before food delivery was so common, I couldn’t go to the store for an extended period of time when the car broke down and was unfixable, so we had no transportation any longer. The store was too far away to walk so we were stranded. We lived on my emergency supplies I’d carefully built up for years. dried beans and biscuits and such, and our food stamps built up for a while, to the point that they were going to expire. We finally had a way to beg a ride to the store from a relative that was in town, and we spent it all at once which must have raised some eyebrows. We filled the freezer before they took back the money. But it was hamburger and tater tots and such. I haven’t had a steak in probably 20 years or more, likely 25 years thinking about it and then it was at my mother’s house, and she bought it.

I know it’s easy to forget, especially when a person sees the abuse of the system frequently, but some people aren’t cheats. I know you only have my word for it, but I haven’t sold my food stamps. I don’t do drugs. And poor people like stuff that tastes good too, especially when a lot of them don’t know how to cook and don’t have much in the way of things to cook on or with. And sometimes their cookies or whatever frivolous seeming thing they might squeeze in are kinda all they get that’s enjoyable.

I’m sure glad I have had the freedom to choose whatever food I want to buy to suit our situation, our needs and our tastes. I hope the system stays the same on that.

I’d be happy to get those farmer food boxes though :slightly_smiling_face:.

And sorry Sheena, this isn’t all directed at you, I guess. People have discussed a lot about EBT users on here and they make it sound like its only strung-out junkies and people committing fraud etc. I certainly understand the high level of resentment that the illegals are getting benefits and so much more than the citizens. But there are so many people are on EBT using the system correctly. Single mom waitresses, college students, people with disabilities, etc. We’re just the invisible law-abiding citizens. But we’re here.

NOBODY should be on food stamps. Why should Americans take care of you? It is not our responsibility to take care of other people. I say abolish food stamps altogether. Disability isn’t an excuse. If you’re able to write something here, you’re able to work. It is simply laziness!!! Get off your butt and get to work!

I don’t disagree with people needing support. I disagree with the government providing it. This should be the community responsibility. We removed this from the church’s and made state the god of people who need help.

My mom was a single parent of 3 back in the 90’s. She’s worked a job starting at $4.20 an hour and in under a year was able to get off of food stamps. I understand hardship. 5 of my 6 family members worked for a grocery store chain. These are things that we witness. And just because it’s fraud doesn’t mean that stop it. It’s a responsibility to the the people to stop the current system because of the amount of fraud.

It’s completely unacceptable that someone would spend $400 on a wedding cake with tax payer money. I have also see, house bound people like my father in law, qualify for $10 a month. While working abled bodied college students received $150.

Proposing to turn it into a WIC situation sounds like it wouldn’t have changed much for you anyways. Ingredients is what should be available and America would be better for it.

Please ignore Suzette she’s a bitter and seem so fun to be around. I bet people say super kind things about her because she so nice.

Oh, I see, I must have misunderstood, I’m sorry. Yes, I’ve heard good argument for the community handling it instead of the government. If nothing else, they’re in a position to have more discretion and judgement and therefore be fairer.

I agree that food stamp fraud is terrible and needs to stop. I wonder what could be done to better enforce the law?

As for the subject of whats her name up there, thankyou Sheena for your kind response to me. I have realized that as I wasn’t really trying to air my life circumstances but only use myself as the best example I had at hand, I’ve not updated my language and was accidentally unclear: If it’s anyone’s concern, I’m actually no longer on food stamps at all. I still don’t have a job and don’t need one as my husband had some good fortune and supports us both himself. I’m no longer the most impoverished person in the room. In fact, I’m sitting here dressed in new clothes from head to foot with organic food on my plate, using a brand-new laptop, living in a place that’s multiple times more expensive than my last apartment (Thankyou Jesus.). We’re not rich by any means but we’re certainly out of the category of getting sneered at like scum for all we lack.

If this changes the value of me or my opinions in anyone’s mind, I suggest some introspection is in order.

And I still haven’t eaten a steak because I kinda forgot about them after all these years. Plus, I don’t have the enzymes to digest it anymore and don’t need the gut ache.

I’m sorry if I spoke as if I’m still on food stamps, though. It’s a habit to think that way. It hasn’t been that long since things changed.
