nope. corporate farming is an extreme misuse of farmland, water and crop. subsidized farming is such a waste. we have been there, done that, dont work. large corporations have had plenty of farm time to fix this problem and only gotten larger. richer, and manipulative. farm lobby is a hoax. even the grange has become a hoax. time to allow citizens to farm as they choose and let the open market dictate demand. community’s across the nation are running out of water due to subsidized corporate farming. i.e. corporate farming uses thousands of acres of choice farmland to grow corn for ethanol, then force citizens to pay for the privilege of burning it in their automobiles. meanwhile no water coming out of the home faucet. making matters worse the gmo seed producers have aligned with corporate farming to eliminate competition. no thank you
There needs to be a ban on patents for seeds altogether to prevent farmers from being sued for patent infringement when they do use those seeds.
I trust farmers to farm!! Reuse those seeds!
I agree with this, I think it is absurd that they have to use other seeds, it’s like we don’t even know what is on or in those seeds or where they truly come from.
What about crops that were GMO - so the seeds they produce are not viable. Farmers are forced to buy seeds year after year. I’m not a farmer but I have heard about this. Ban GMO foods.
I would love to bring the small farmer back.
Absolutely
This issue was brought to my attention a few years back regarding David vs. Monsanto. The precedence of Monsanto (Agent Orange, Roundup) being able to sue a farmer for washing and reusing seeds based on the idea that their pesticides infect soil after use and then requires that farmer to purchase seeds directly from Monsanto in perpetuity feels downright unconstitutional.
If I recall, (let me know if I’m wrong) there were cases in which Monsanto claimed that a neighboring farm utilizing their pesticides could infect your farm due to proximity, and thus they could sue for use of non-Monsanto seeds.
Farmers are a backbone to the larger population in any given community. We need to empower them, or they will continue to disappear.
Ok, it appears your new or newish to farming, seeds an Amish practices. Im not knocking you, please don’t think i am. I applaude you for your interest an participation. We all have much to learn.
I really only wanted to address a misconception. I speak from experience as i live in and around the Amish community here in Michigan. They are hands down great folks, but they are human and not immune to human fallacy. I do go to them often for questions and guidance in regards to farming, animal husbandry as well as to the English as they say.
In regards to planting practices, just to make clear, while they do use a lot of Heritage seeds ( seeds which breed true when planted) they too also use seed hybrid ( Does not breed true). Please don’t mix Gmo (Genetically modified seeds) an hybrids either. Lots of people do.
Hybrids are not all bad, with the exception of wheat an that is my personal opinion. Hybridized seeds occur in nature as well in the gardners greenhouse or in gov places. It is a science. It is how we can create better plants to withstand certain diseases and fungus and climates.
And make local seed libraries/exchanges legal for backyard growers. I think this was banned during Obama administration (along with water catchment) (at a state level). Some weird WEF nonsense seeping in at a community level.
I agree with this! We farm and it’s a shame that the big corporations have such a hold on the farmers!
Its hard to make a living farming these days with all the BS politicans have done to us
My family owns and operates a Feed and Seed store. In the last few years, it has been impossible to get certain heirloom seeds from the usual distributors. They have told us that the farmers who grow these plants for seeds have stopped growing them altogether. This means that NOBODY will be able to grow these vegetables unless farmers are allowed to grow and save seeds for themselves and to share. My point, not every seed is available for purchase and farmers need to be able to use what they have or what they have saved.
any citizen who considers the thought of producing their own quality produce, (self sufficient) should be aware of the seed monopoly. there are still local produce growers who promote “heritage”. i have purchased heritage starts from the master gardener group in my area and others. I have also purchased a large variety of heritage seeds for storage online. seeds store well in a cool, dry, dark space with no than 30 degree temperature swings. packaging is key.
I’d absolutely love to have more heritage seeds used. Cross pollination corrupts the heritage seed lines. US corn is so bad that Mexico will not allow US corn imports for fear of damaging their own corn crops. Everything corn in the US is GMO. Even corn syrup.
I agree. Seeds, and at some level we should all be discussing water, sunshine and air that is free from intervention.
No farms no food. Enough is enough of these large seed organizations ruining farmers. Shut down the black suburbans checking dna of crops and ruining a mom and pop farm.
Is this not a right now?! That seems crazy to me.
I do not believe it is right for any living things to be patented. But at least let the patents be only five or ten years
I don’t think there are any small farmers left. There are a few large operations that are not owned by coporate interests, but damned few. Most food grown today is grown by corporate farms. That includes animal and vegetable production.
In any case, it should be illegal to copyright or patent any living organism.
While we’re getting that done, let’s stop pharma from advertising any product that is not sold over the counter.
