Conclusion

The Equity in Academic Records and Protection Against Discrimination Policy is essential to uphold the rights of all students, particularly those from marginalized communities. By ensuring that academic records are managed with integrity and that students are protected from bullying and discrimination, the school can foster a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.

My story

Throughout my time in school, I faced severe emotional abuse and bullying, primarily because I identify as a gay man. Despite maintaining a solid academic record with a 3.7 GPA, I encountered relentless harassment from both teachers and my guidance counselor. They not only subjected me to derogatory names but also made cruel comments that left me feeling worthless and isolated. When I bravely reported the use of homosexual slurs against me, their response was dismissive and belittling.

My mother attempted to advocate for me during this troubling time, but her efforts were largely ignored by school staff. This lack of support only exacerbated my feelings of despair. In an effort to escape the toxic environment, I decided to switch schools, hoping for a fresh start and a more accepting atmosphere. Unfortunately, the situation at the new school was even worse. One particular counselor exhibited openly racist behavior and frequently blamed me for the bullying I experienced. Their comments, such as telling me that I was a “worthless piece of shit” and that people like me “don’t deserve anything in life,” were not only hurtful but had a profound impact on my self-esteem and mental health.

Academically, I was placed in special education for subjects like math and English due to my learning challenges. Although I struggled with reading comprehension and had not been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder until my late 20s, I was still able to perform well in my classes. I often received A’s and B’s, demonstrating that I could succeed despite the obstacles I faced. My main support in science came from a teacher’s aide, and I learned to rely on accommodations like using an expensive calculator for math.

As I approached my junior year, I set my sights on attending college and pursuing a career in medicine. I felt optimistic, especially after being told by teachers that I was on track for graduation. However, in my senior year, I noticed something was very wrong. As my classmates ordered their cap and gown, I didn’t receive any information about the process. When I inquired, a teacher laughed at me and made a disparaging comment about my dreams of becoming a doctor, saying that those aspirations were unrealistic.

Upon reviewing my transcript, I was shocked to discover that my grades had been altered to reflect those of a 10th grader. All four years of my academic record showed my hard-earned A’s and B’s, except for my senior year, which contained failing grades like 75, 55, and 55. Furthermore, I was denied the opportunity to take all of my final exams—only two were allowed.

Now, reflecting on the emotional and academic challenges I faced, I am considering the possibility of taking legal action against my school. I believe I have grounds for a lawsuit based on the bullying, emotional abuse, and the wrongful alteration of my academic records. I want to hold the school accountable for their actions and seek justice for the impact this experience has had on my life.
