Many Americans struggle with things during their lives. The drug epidemic is rampant dragging many young adults into the life of petty crime and drug abuse. Many are dealing with mental health issues that need addressed that can also lead to drug abuse. When a person commits a crime, pays their fees, serves their time, why are they still being punished 20 years down the line? If you have never had a criminal past it’s hard to understand, but overcoming that is not as easy as choosing to do better. The cards are stacked against you. It’s harder to find work because people and hiring software throw you out before even giving you a chance to present yourself. You also have to shamefully report it your entire life and some doors are permanently shut for good. How do we expect people to not give up hope when one mistake can ruin your whole life? A person in America should never have their future limited permanently for a non violent offense it’s unconstitutional. People need to see that if they overcome their negative behaviors they can be just as prosperous and still reach for that dream to be a doctor, nurse, lawyer, or engineer. I believe hope could be helpful to a lot of people. I propose a judicial reform that removes non violent and drug related offenses from being reported to background checks for employers and licensing boards after 5 years of completion of terms. We have to give people the right to do better and change for the better, it is an isolating tactic that does nothing but hinder people from moving forward in life.
