Many states ban homebirth, causing women’s rights to give birth at home to be infringed upon. Midwives are even given felonies in some states for attending home births. This is due to big pharma lobbying who want to prevent couples from avoiding a huge hospital bill, and choose to give birth safely at home paying much less. Insurance companies refuse to cover home birth. NC Governor Roy Cooper has even said: “I don’t want to encourage it” when asked if he would remove the laws against midwives. Women have the right to give birth in the comfort of their own homes without fear of repercussions from the government, CPS, or be prevented from hiring a birth worker to assist them in their birth. Many women are not comfortable in a hospital setting.
- our last birth was a homebirth and it was the most divine experience - this is a sacred ritual to humanity and must be protected. The profiteers seek to productize and dehumanized the experience. This is something that we the people must pursue!
Homebirth can be a gateway experience for many families, leading back to our human roots of deeper bonding, better health outcomes, and autonomous decision making for the future. Homebirth is a personal choice but a gift to humanity because it is the act of reclaiming that moment which belongs to us, not the medical industry. It is time to remove legal barriers to homebirth.
I would also add removing restrictions from “homebirth-based” licensed midwives from having to tell women they need to transfer to a hospital during labor or having to abandon care for a pregnant woman. Things like breech positioned babies, going into labor before 37 weeks or after 42 weeks, waters broken for an extended period of time, having to carry pitocin, tractioning the cord, etc. The list of restrictions goes on and on. These types of horrendous restrictions keep women from being able to stay home and labor how they please and give birth to their babies in a quiet and loving environment. Instead, we are telling midwives who practice in our homes, that they cannot be there if A, B, and C are happening, which, in turn, leaves mothers and babies traumatized in the most important and vital times of their lives.
