Active duty military members stationed overseas are not given any guidance for management of unexpected pregnancy except for assistance with locating the nearest abortion clinic. There is no standard advice or policy given within OB clinics, chapels, legal offices, first sergeants, or mental health. It is simply up to the young woman to bear the burden on her own and the path of least resistance, the one which is most easily shown her by the system, is one that leads toward abortion. My brother-in-law was adopted as a baby from a young woman in this situation. Our active duty members deserve to receive full availability and support to get them through this difficult situation, including the opportunity to choose adoption. As a retired military physician I have an idea to implement policy working with already existing stateside agencies to ensure that our servicewomen are given the full spectrum of options when faced with unplanned pregnancy, including adoption.
