Election Campaign Limits

Proposing a bill to limit the span of election-related campaign advertising.

All too often, an increasingly so in the past decade due to the rise and ubiquitousness of technology and social media, political campaigns have exploded to every nook of our lives as American citizens. On our TV, on our phones, on our yards, and, even, through our work, political advertisements have overrun our daily lives leading up to election season.

From the ever-changingness of politics on a day-by-day basis-- see Joe Biden’s resignation of the Democratic ticket-- all too often, the message, theme, or the motive behind a campaign can change before our eyes. Too little research is done by the independent, individual american-- who now relies on the passive absorption of knowledge through doom scrolling.

In order to encourage better education of the american populace through individual work, I believe that interested citizens will do the research-- even the bare minimum-- in order to gain said knowledge. We are allowing ourselves to be susceptible to propoganda otherwise.

Election campaigns should be limited to public, paid-advertisements no more than a 30 days before a scheduled election. Campaign events that are in-person or livestreamed do not qualify under this statute. Political advertisements that provide no substantial information regarding local events or fundraisers-- i.e campaign advertisements directed towards “spreading the message… informing the people… raising awareness… or getting out there,” should not be tolerated as a majority category of public media advertising on the market.

Political figures should focus on the job in the government rather than a re-election campaign without the worry of fresh-faces having a competitive edge. The American people should have a responsibility to be aware of their own elected officials’ campaigns in the months leading up to an election. Persons who primarily vote along party lines are not generally swayed by political advertisements. Persons who are swayed by political advertisements deserve to have all information regarding a candidate provided to them in a timely, reasonable, and guaranteed fashion, as opposed to at the whim of the campaigns.

Agreed the flood of advertising is overwhelming and extreme. Limiting the length of time is necessary to reduce the mudslinging and general imposition on the voters lives for what seems like a year or more every 4 years.
This needs to be limited to no more than 90 days and include a provision the also classifies “news stories” that also act as free advertising as part of that limit.
