I know this probably sounds harsh but i truly think it should be mandatory for people to have to take drivers tests periodically (every 2? 3? 4? Years) after the age of 60-65 to keep their drivers license. This is for their own and everyone else’s safety. So many accidents are caused by elderly drivers who pull out in front of people, drive 20+miles under the speed limit, etc. I know this may fall more under “state law” but it’s worth discussing.
Au contrare mon ami! EVERYONE from first to last renewal (8-10 years). Aging, medical conditions, bad habits, distractions, responsibilities, moves, etc. All sorts of life changes impact our ability to drive safely.
However, that may be accomplished on the road or in a simulator.(preferred). AARP, AAA and others also offer online knowledge testing that should be required periodically at a minimum. Every 10 years?
Let’s not discriminate!
It is harsh. No reason. Maybe you young people shouldn’t drive so fast.
I completely agree with raising the age as well!
I appreciate the compliment Mrs Linda. I do not “drive too fast” everywhere i go or anything. Where i live we have 75mph speed limits. When you have everyone moving at 75mph (give or take a few) it is absolutely irresponsible for someone to be doing 45-55mph. It’s unsafe. There’s minimum speed limits posted with the speed limit sign but that does nothing. Its just completely irresponsible and dangerous to drive 20+ mph under the speed limit. I have seen it cause some very severe accidents and 100% of the accidents I’ve seen caused by slower drivers have been over the age of 70. This isn’t an opinion, it’s a fact. I do agree with the person above you that the minimum age should be raised as well because 16 year olds absolutely have less awareness than someone 21 years old. I don’t want you thinking I’m being discriminate against elderly people as that’s not the case.
I still say nope. it is discrimination.
I think both sides have a point here. It is age discrimination but at the same time, I have seen many 80+yo drivers pull out onto the highway where there is 50mph+ and only go 35mph. If this speed is kept, and they go over a hill, it is hard for traffic to stop on a dime to avoid hitting them. I had a neighbor who served in Korea, was over 90yo, and drove a very large pickup. He was a disaster waiting to happen – he died in that very truck. There is a line, somewhere, that should be drawn, if only lightly, for the very same reason that it is drawn on the lower end of the age bracket of licensed drivers. Likewise, is it not also “age discrimination” if we don’t toss the car keys to a 10 year old? By the same arguement, it would be (regardless of ‘minor’ status). Public safety overrides age at some point, especially if an entire family is wiped out because we let either a 10 year old, or a 110 year old behind the wheel.
Without taking sides, I think perhaps a point is being made that should be addressed in the “public safety” space using real scientific data. My two cents.
