Many, many people are hurt from doctors using mesh in the body, most without informed consent, sometimes without FDA approval. I would love to see more education from the patients to the doctors. Many manufacturers of mesh do not even educate the doctors regarding the dangers of putting a foreign body, many times polypropylene, into the body. This is a problem that is world-wide. I have spoken to many people who are devastated because of this practice. The doctors, of course, get a kickback for using the manufacturer’s product. The doctors are not even informed as to what kind of problems the mesh can cause, so they can’t educate the patient to give an informed consent to use mesh in their bodies.
Now, the " new & improved" mesh is bioengineered. This in my experience is worse or at least just as bad as any of the other mesh. I speak from experience regarding this. The mesh migrated from my diaphragm into my esophagus and cost me three years of hell. And, the doctor who did the surgery was oblivious as to what was causing my problem, or I was just getting gas lighted.
I really would like to see more education about this so that the patient can make up his own mind whether it is worth it to have mesh used in his body.
Thanks!!!
I am one of hundreds of thousands of women that are a victim of medical mesh injury. Medical Mesh was developed for use with hernias and NEVER intended to be used for vaginal prolapse or bladder leakage, but because of FDA LOOPHOLES, it has been allowed. There are some brands that have been banned due to injury, but then the manufacturer opens a new company, gives it a new name, and off to market it goes. Never tested. No long term studies. Doctors don’t do their own research. Yet TODAY there will be over 100 women who unknowingly agree to let their doctors use it. Women travel from Canada and Europe to see one of a handful of mesh removal experts in St. Louis MO, many selling everything they own just to afford it. Others that are not that financially lucky suffer for the rest of their lives. Something needs to be done about this. It needs to be pulled from the market for this particular use. Doctors need to be educated on the serious side effects and share that information with patients instead of belittling them when they ask about the safety. I almost died from sepsis before I got it out. I am permanently injured for life because of it.
