My husband is blind and receives disability. We have two young sons. We receive nutrition assistance and I work part-time. When I get an increase in pay, let’s say it increases by $30 per month, I lose $100 in monthly nutrition assistance. We are barely getting by as it is. If assistance were to reduce dollar-for-dollar, I think it would be possible for more people to work their way off of benefits.
Additionally, I don’t believe government assistance should reduce nutrition assistance when a disability recipient receives the annual cost of living increase. Obviously that increase is due to a documented increase in costs; why on earth would access to food be reduced because of it?!
We are doing our best with the situation we are in and do not wish to be dependent upon the government for assistance…but these drop-off reductions really hold families back.
Make a dollar for dollar gradual decrease in benefits for every dollar increased in pay and I am certain more families will get off of benefits sooner!
