Destroy the DHS

Evolution and Founding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under George W. Bush: Founding: - September 11, 2001 Attacks: The terrorist attacks on 9/11 revealed critical weaknesses in U.S. homeland security, leading to the establishment of DHS.
-Formation of DHS: President George W. Bush proposed the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in June 2002. Following Congressional passage, he signed the Homeland Security Act into law on November 25, 2002. DHS commenced operations on March 1, 2003.

  • Purpose: DHS was designed to prevent terrorist attacks within the U.S., reduce vulnerability to terrorism, and manage the consequences of attacks and natural disasters. Structure: - It was created by consolidating 22 different federal entities, including FEMA, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and parts of the FBI, among others, to unify the nation’s homeland security efforts.
    Failures and Criticisms:
Intelligence Sharing: - Pre-9/11 Intelligence Failures: The department was meant to rectify the lack of inter-agency communication, a known issue from the 9/11 Commission report:
  • Continued Silos: Despite the merger, intelligence sharing has not always improved significantly due to cultural resistance and bureaucratic inertia.
  • Bureaucratic Complexity: The integration has sometimes created more complexity, leading to inefficiencies in information flow. Mission Failures:
  1. Katrina Disaster Response: DHS’s response to Hurricane Katrina was widely criticized for its inadequacy, pointing to fundamental issues in emergency management.
  2. Border Security and Immigration:
  • Border Control: Despite efforts, the effectiveness of border security measures has been debated, with illegal crossings still occurring at high levels.
  • Immigration Policies: DHS, particularly through ICE and CBP, has faced backlash for its enforcement tactics, leading to legal challenges and public outcry over family separations and asylum policies.
  1. Cybersecurity: CISA’s role has been questioned when major cyber incidents occur, suggesting a need for more robust preventive measures.
  2. Intelligence Operations: The effectiveness of DHS’s intelligence gathering and analysis has been under scrutiny: - Reactive vs. Proactive: The department has often been criticized for being reactive to threats rather than proactive.
  • Politicization Risks: There have been instances where intelligence operations appeared to be influenced by political agendas.
  1. Civil Liberties Concerns: Efforts to enhance security have sometimes been at odds with privacy and civil liberties:
  • Surveillance Practices: Programs like those associated with NSA have sparked privacy debates.
  • Legal and Ethical Concerns: Policies have occasionally been seen as infringing on civil liberties without sufficient legal justification.
    Under Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:
    Criticisms and Controversies:

-Impeachment Efforts: In 2024, Secretary Mayorkas faced an impeachment vote, accused by some Republicans of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and breach of public trust, particularly concerning immigration policies. However, these charges were dismissed by the Senate without a trial, suggesting a lack of consensus on his culpability.
  • DariĂ©n Gap Initiatives: - Meetings with NGOs and Colombia: Secretary Mayorkas visited Colombia in 2021 and 2022, engaging with NGOs and discussing migration through the DariĂ©n Gap. These discussions aimed at creating a “safe, legal, and orderly” migration process but have been controversial:
  • Criticism: Critics argue that these initiatives might encourage migration rather than deter it, potentially violating the spirit, if not the letter, of immigration laws by not strictly enforcing border security.
-Legal and Policy Concerns: There’s contention over whether these efforts align with or contravene U.S. immigration law, especially regarding the provision of assistance to migrants which might be seen as facilitating illegal entry.
  • Funding and Assistance: There have been discussions about funding and support for NGOs to help migrants navigate the DariĂ©n Gap, raising questions about the allocation of resources and whether such actions effectively manage or exacerbate immigration challenges. -
Allegations of Favoritism: During his tenure as USCIS Director, Mayorkas was investigated for possibly showing favoritism in expediting visa applications for foreign investors. Although cleared of legal wrongdoing, the perception of favoritism lingered.
  • Border Policy Execution: Mayorkas’s approach to border management has been criticized for not doing enough to secure the border, leading to record numbers of encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Conclusion: DHS under George W. Bush was established to centralize and enhance national security and emergency response capabilities. Over time, and particularly under Secretary Mayorkas, the department has faced ongoing challenges in unifying intelligence, managing border security, and executing its mission without infringing on civil liberties.
The current administration’s approach to migration, especially through initiatives involving the Darién Gap, has drawn sharp criticism for potentially encouraging rather than controlling illegal immigration. Despite some successes in emergency preparedness and public safety, DHS continues to grapple with its core mission of securing the homeland while respecting the rights and laws of the United States.

I agree, this was a knee jerk government over reaction. The Patriot Act was a power grab by intelligence agencies and has been/will be weaponized against the citizens of this nation. Unnecessary expansion of government.

I feel like between the FBI CIA NSA and DHS we have ALOT of redundancy.

I think we all agree. DOGE should end DHS and merge its function into another Agency. In fact 90% of all agencies created in the past 20 years should be ended and their functions cancelled or merged into other agencies. I am sure DOGE is onto this.
