Create mandatory CARCINOGEN LEVEL LABELING system for foods

Just as there is a nutrition information label, stating the calories, fat content and vitamin information for a product, the federal government should require a TOXICITY LABEL, listing all known carcinogens used in ALL processes for ALL ingredients included in a product. This will provide TRANSPARENCY for consumers with full information and better understanding of toxins used THROUGHOUT the entire manufacturing process of every food ingredient item.
Clear labeling should be required as to the amount of toxicity in each food item consumed. This will help consumers limit their overall exposure to known carcinogens as they make food choices throughout the day.
It is immoral and unethical for food companies to have these carcinogenic agents in the food that they are selling at levels just below those set permitted levels in their products.
The current system allows companies NOT to DISCLOSE known carcinogens and allows companies to manipulate serving sizes to stay within their set parameters, legally protecting THE COMPANY from harm, but do not provide the consumer adequate information or warning about not exceeding these limits and exceeding those so-called safe parameters, thereby unknowingly raising consumer risk of bodily injury and illness.

What would this label look like?
Can you give an example prototype?
A bar scale might be useful like they have for energy efficiency on appliances.

Perhaps this policy suggestion should be expanded to include all consumer products, including and especially electronic devices that emit any detectable levels of electromagnetic radiation (ie: wireless devices, etc). Thanks.

I don’t think the forum initiative stipulates that we have to design prototypes or actually build out the regulatory or legal framework of a policy in order to submit a policy for consideration. If we were held to that stipulation, there would not be many posts in this forum, right? Perhaps we can worry about how to flesh out a good policy proposal after it is suggested and adopted by policy officials? Just a thought.

Thanks Susan,
I was hoping to get an idea of what that might look like on a package. I would hope that if someone suggests a policy they’d have some idea how that would be implemented practically. Do you have any other helpful points?

I think your idea of a bar scale on packaging is a wonderful idea for such conveyance on packaging. Perhaps a horizontal bar with numerical metrics across one side, where the bar is clearly color-coded and shaded to the numerical rating of carcinogen level or cancer-causing exposure. It would be very difficult to standardize this sort of labeling, but perhaps there are those out there who are much more capable then us, who might assist, if the policy is adopted. :slightly_smiling_face:

This proposed solution may also be applied as a multi-vector approach…
