There exists an important and sacred trust between the people and our elected (and appointed) public officials. When an official or LEO commits crimes of any kind, it severs that trust, and reduces our faith in our government and Police.
It is proposed therefore, that any public official or law enforcement officer convicted in a fair and speedy trial of any crime, should have mandatory enhancements on their sentence. Misdemeanors should have mandatory fine of at least $10,000 as well as a mandatory jail sentence of at least 6 months. Those convicted of felony charges should face either 2.5 times the base prison sentence or mandatory minimum of 10 years, whichever is more severe. This will help to hold our public officials accountable and preserve the rule of law while also serving as a deterrent against corruption.
That’s ridiculous. All people should be held to the same account under the law. There are already laws in probably every state concerning “malfeasance in office”. To “enhance” the penalties because of one’s job or position is absurd.
Heavily disagree. Elected officials and law enforcement should be held to a higher standard compared to the general public. We trust them to create and enforce the laws, when they break the laws, that trust is broken and heavily betrays that trust and erodes faith in our government and our institutions. The laws you state imo do not go nearly far enough. We should expect better from our public officials, and this proposal, while not a be all end all solution, would better help to fight the two-tiered system of justice we currently have in place. I see nothing “absurd” about it.
