Forbid Congress from voting pay increases to their held positions. Instead, each time Congress wants a raise, the public gets to vote on it as a ballot measure during Presidential Elections only. Majority rules, yes or no for all.
Same pay as their States’ GDP, same health insurance as all of us = incentives to fix things.
How about no pay raises at all. They shouldnt be in office long enough to warrant one.
Congress members - just as it was designed initially- shall not be “a paying job” at all; but they should be provided with services meeting the needs at sessions and, to an extent, at represented state. Should include meal, shelter, adequate security and some basic representation costs.
And they should be under special scrutiny if all of sudden beginning to take substantial amounts in (insider trading, “gifts and grants”, “lecture toots”, “book deals”, etc.)
I think the majority of people agree with this but how would it get passed? The people who pass these measures would be voting against themselves. There are a few that would but you need a majority.
Congress was never meant to be a full time, paid government position. The should only be compensated for the time they spend in session, plus travel expense, NOT INCLUDING 1st class seats on airlines.
Why subject the Nation to a vote for Bob Bureaucrat’s pay. The State elected representatives should be employed by the State and have NO federal compensation. State buys a residence in DC for their representative, like the Governor’s mansion, pays their salary, all other expenses, and if they want a raise, they go to their employers, the people of the area they represent and ask for it. The state also pays for staffers. I do not care what California or New York pays their representatives, as long as they tax their own residents to pay for it. If a lower paid representative from a small state want to make more, move to a higher paying state, like real people.
It will require either massive pressure from the public, or an Article 5 convention. Personally, I view the former as a much safer option. They do pay attention to us when we get loud enough.
Congress votes for themselves pay increases to you think they’re going to vote that in not that I don’t agree with you but you know maybe something like individual states may tax their US legislators pay by up to x amount of dollars for the honor of being able to represent them. The states would have to pass that individually I think but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work it’s like a luxury tax. No since the representative is a citizen of their state they might be able to pass some kind of tax that said that their citizens also have to pay for insider trading
They should have term and age limits as well as a set salary with cost of living adjustments every 10 or so years and the same medical insurance as the citizens that voted them into office. That would weed outthe ones that are just there for the " perks" and maybe we could get people in office that actually care about thete constitutants
