Why is college tuition so expensive, especially for out-of-state students? Middle-class families often find that their children do not qualify for scholarships, particularly if they are married or if their children face academic challenges. Families who work overtime to afford tuition often earn just enough to be disqualified from financial aid, making higher education costs unreasonable. Tuition structures should reflect the earning potential of a degree; for instance, graduates earning $35,000 annually should not be burdened with over $100,000 in student debt. Furthermore, if colleges can afford to pay athletes who already receive free education, it suggests that tuition fees are excessive.
