As a young woman bordering between the millienial and gen z generations I believe it important to clarify what reproductive rights for women actually look like. I have always been a big believer in the exceptions Trump has stated he supports; rape, incest, and low survivability for mother and/or baby. I have always been of the mindset that 8-12 weeks should be the cut off in cases unrelated to these exceptions, however, things I believe could further combat the “I’m not ready to be/dont want to be a mom” epidemic amongst our young women in this country would be as follows:
I believe a good first step would be starting at age 18, once a woman reaches adulthood we allow her the right to get a reversible tubal, permanent tubal, or hysterectomy done without having to have pre-existing children or permission from a partner. I have heard from several women that their experience seeking one of the mentioned procedures usually leads to them being told they should wait until they’re 25, have 2-3 kids, or getting asked if their husband wants more children. Some of these were women that I personally knew didn’t ever want children and were trying to do what they felt was the responsible thing to do. I believe the abortion issue is one that can be combatted with this freedom of choice prior to ever becoming pregnant. If we allow adults to make and be held accountable for their adult choices then that will open doors to positive progress.
