Civics Class Requirements

It seems that most kids are graduating high school with little to no Civics knowledge. Perhaps there should be more emphasis placed on teaching it more thoroughly throughout K-12.

In my state, K-3 does pretty well with pacing of civics and teaching government. 4th grade focuses on the entire state. There is not enough time given to fully explore the history, geography and uniqueness of the state. 5th grade moves to the nation. Again, not enough time allocated to the history, geography and uniqueness of our nation. Currently our district allocates every other 9 weeks to social studies.

Sixth graders study ancient civilizations on the other side of the world. They should be continuing their study of the USA! And, its only for one semester! Teachers have to move at a quick pace to cover all the material. Again, no mastery, just a quick frosting of each one.
