I believe that welfare recipients should no longer receive monetary benefits to go out and purchase their own food. They should have to fill out monthly questionnaires stating specific needs and/or allergies that will correlate to a premade box of healthy organic choices (or take standard pre-made boxes) that can either be picked up at a food bank or delivered weekly or biweekly. This box can include specific ingredients as well as menus and recipes for a weekly food schedule.
This could provide tens of thousands of (assembly, delivery, food bank) jobs for the same unemployed people currently living on the welfare program. Now they can earn their money. It will also prevent the illegal use of these cards being sold for $.50 on the dollar for cash ( so the cash can instead be used for drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, or gambling .).
This will also save the government hundreds of thousands -if not millions - of dollars, as they can buy in bulk to keep prices down. Healthier eating will in turn result in less government-paid/welfare doctor visits.
In the past, I have heard people complain that it should be their choice what they want to eat. The luxury of choice is not a right when you’re expecting someone else to support you. Besides, disliking the food they are given, might even help propel them to go out and seek a job, so they can actually have what they want.
There also needs to be a strict program, regulating the names and Social Security numbers of the people living in the house claiming need. This will stop scam artists, and double dipping.
