Return some of our heartland to the way it was “when the buffalo roamed” while sequestering carbon and feeding America at the same time. Enable multi-state migrations by connecting ranches to land otherwise unsuitable for agriculture via powerline right-of-ways to recreate paths allowing for migration of large herds of cattle. Reduce giant factory farms by combining the rewilding movement with the grass-fed movement to produce grass-fed grass-finished beef, a process that would actually capture carbon via millions of hooves trampling grass and manure into the ground as the cattle pass through, eventually recreating the magnificent 9’ thick soils that existed before the arrival of the plow. Independent ranchers could voluntarily join to share their land for the migrations, receiving a proportion of the income from sale of the cattle based on the amount of their acreage crossed during the migrations. Utilities and other parties involved in connecting the corridors would receive compensation as well. The migration routes could start small, but eventually crisscross the country if enough routes can be assembled that avoid dense urban areas. Perhaps there would even be tourist events to view some of the larger herd movements akin to those of the 1800’s described in this quote linked below when there were 50 to 100 million buffalo roaming the plains:
In 1871, an American soldier named George Anderson sent a letter to his sweetheart describing a herd he saw in Kansas. “I am safe in calling this a single herd,” he wrote, “but it is impossible to approximate the millions that composed it. It took me six days on horseback to ride through it."
