My observation is that by lowering the milestones we are being asked to “agree and accept” that most children are what I would called “delayed”, or that “average” is now considered “accelerated”? This is a horrible trend, and I wonder what it is based upon. I already had a great deal of trouble in the 90’s and 2000’s with our public schools not challenging my advanced children (Gifted and MENSA), because the school curriculum is dumbed-down, in my opinion, aimed to teach mainly to the lower end of the bell regarding exceptions, and not to the top. This caused the middle and the top to be forced to learn the same as what I call learning disabilities (since they were not separated). Our schools did not offer any options at that time, (meaning that as a result I had to fight the County and the State to uphold existing law and policies that they’d never implemented to provide educational exceptions to my gifted and genius children). The other problem was the teachers. By kindergarten my child could already read at about a 5th grade level. The teacher had guidance call me telling me my child was sitting quietly and not paying attention, and that she believed he had a learning disability. At which point I had to talk about my child to the school, who insisted that “my version” of my child, and “the teachers version” were completely different, and that therefore they would need to do testing to “prove that what I say is true”. They did testing and then called to excitedly announce the high results, but then quickly informed that they did not have gifted classes for grade K. I had to stop the lady and remind that “I don’t recall asking for anything, let’s review - your teacher said my child belonged in the retarded class, and I didn’t agree - all I wanted was for my child to enjoy school and have a positive experience - I asked for nothing special”. A long and horrible future, when by 6th grade they pretended my child was never tested - so I said “test him again then!” And the results were the same, in 6th grade he tested out at 2nd year of college levels. Yet, they continued to do nothing to help him, instead punishing when he didn’t “complete repetitive assignments”. It was hell. To make milestones and standards lower for our youth I believe will cause above average children to get bored, and act in ways that I call “circling the drain”, a result of the boredom is also never being challenged to strive to meet high goals. It could be vax related (my mother was nurse, and worked for a Dr who believed in separating the shots (not having a lot at one visit). Let’s do the opposite of lowering goals, developmental milestones and expectations, and make better decisions that help children excel, at all levels.
