Political TV ads are one of the most misleading and unnecessary apparatus of modern politics. They serve no real purpose other than to confuse voters and drive up the cost to participate in our democracy. Eliminating them entirely would be a great benefit to both the public and the politicians that spend money countering false claims, or spreading falsehoods about their political rival(s).
Instead, politicians should hold rally’s, and hold public debates; both should be broadcast online, uncensored, over the major television network providers.
In addition, politicians should be encouraged to embrace long form online interviews that allow for deep and nuanced discussions of their policies and worldviews.
All political ads can only be used to state YOUR policies or plan. Negative ads or lies about the opponent are now permitted but that should end. Platforms with free speech can provide information about the opponent. The negativity has filtered to everything we do in our nation. Tell me what YOU plan to do, not what you THINK the other candidate will do.
