The US should ban new construction and reconstruction in Flood Zones. When the flood maps show that an area is likely to be flooded, it is going to be at some point! I was appalled after Katrina with all the reconstruction that took place and put the same people in harms way once again. The same with all the reconstruction going on in Western NC region. This ban should include roads and bridges. Pay flood insurance on a property ONCE, but ban reconstruction. Build somewhere else! Over time fewer and fewer people and properties will be in danger, saving lives, as well as billions of dollars.
The biggest problem with this is that it’s not the governments right to ban rebuilding or building on your own land just because it’s in a flood zone. The flood maps are constantly changing while right landscapes shift. As well as it could be flooded every year to areas that flood every 100 yrs. Flood zones get adjusted too much with roads and access changes. As someone who lives in a flood zone my land is mine no one has the right to ban me rebuilding its my choice and I pay flood insurance. No one has the right to push people in NC out of their land and rebuilding. If people chose to stay there is their choice. You can’t just refuse to build roadways back and leave people stranded that rebuild. The ground shifting & natural disasters change the lay out too much, at one point or another your just a likely to get hit with a tornado or something else. Would you want those hit by a tornado banned from rebuilding because they live in tornado alley?? No we can’t ban people from what they do with their property.
Ok, ban national flood insurance for new/re- construction in flood zones. It is not the government’s responsibility to protect someone’s property if they choose to build in a flood zone. Flood zones only get adjusted to account for construction. land shifts, and climate change. Why should people who are cautious enough to build outside of flood zones pay for those that continuously rebuild? There are properties that have been rebuilt multiple times! Tornadoes are not covered by flood insurance, and homeowners is a private industry, not government. The Flood Insurance program is a huge government expense that should just go private.
National flood insurance is NOT paid for by tax payers. It’s regulated by the government nationallyverses by state like regular property insurance. The government doesn’t pay for it is simply how it’s named. Did you seriously not know that? The government does not pay for your flood ins when you build in a flood zone. You do not pay for someones home who chooses to build in a flood zone. I’m also a licensed insurance agent, but i didn’t know people were miss informed thinking the flood insurance program was paid for by the government. That’s why they have no say on rebuilds they have nothing to do with it as owners we pay. I pay for regular homeowners as well as a flood policy on my home.
Because of the risk of insurance its self and FEMA controlling flood ins it by its nature of uneven odds. They’ve used government money set for the program to cover losses. However homeowners do pay for they’re insurance not just you paying for my insurance. The government took it over to regulate it and make it fair as well as help stop some of the rebuild unless certain circumstances are met. But your acting like you just past for it. The people rebuilding also work and pay taxes that are covering a loss. Not every tax dollar is yours. And flood insurance is expensive to buy so not just anyone is rebuilding and we pay very well
It’s also a requirement to get a loan for the home or rebuild. What you percieve as the govt spending money on the program is actually them covering claims and running out of money paid in premiums because of using the money in other ways and catstrophic weather is not the typical flood plane losses.
They also have strict rebuild and build rules. My home is built 5ft above what the flood maps have a flood. My house is also barely in a flood zone but I’m still required to have it, pay for it, and have used none of the pre I’ve paid in. So they have rules to help it be less likely to flood. I’ve been through a flood in Wky after the tornado we were hit by a flood. My house because of the rules did not get flooded. I’m not trying to be mean just share info because you seemed to not know that we pay our premiums. And that there are rebuild and build rules. The government just mishandled money paid in as it usually does. Aswell as once in a lifetime weather in recent years they weren’t prepared by the money they spend is premium paid in if done right. Just like for regular home owners insurance.
The cost of the insurance program was fully covered by its premiums until the end of 2004, but it has had to steadily borrow funds since, primarily due to [Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy, accumulating $25 billion of debt by August 2017. Congress cancelled $16 billion of NFIP debt, making it possible for the program to pay claims. The NFIP owed $20.525 billion to the U.S. as of December 2020.
It is not just the claims. Rebuilding in flood zones is putting people in harms way! And not just the people who choose to live there, but their children, and emergency responders.
