I am proposing a policy that bans ghost job postings—an unethical practice that is currently harming job seekers across industries, especially in tech. Ghost jobs are fake job listings created by companies with no intention of hiring. Instead, these listings are designed to manipulate current employees by making them believe their jobs are at risk and that the company is looking for new hires at higher rates. This tactic pressures employees to work harder out of fear of being replaced, while job candidates, mostly recent college graduates, waste their time and energy applying for positions that don’t exist.
My brother, who graduated in computer science more than a year ago, has experienced the frustration of this practice firsthand. Along with many of his friends, he has applied to thousands of jobs, but only a handful of companies have called back, and none have resulted in legitimate offers. Same has happened to his friends who are just as experienced in computer science since high school from robotics, coding using different programs, among other qualifications. Ghost job postings are a significant contributor to the growing stress and financial hardship for recent graduates and experienced professionals alike. This practice is not only deceptive but also contributes to the inefficiency of the job market.
Companies that post ghost jobs should be held accountable. By implementing this policy, we would ensure that jobs are listed only when there is a genuine intent to hire. Sanctions should be imposed on companies and job platforms that post these fake positions, discouraging this harmful practice and making the job search process more transparent and efficient.
This policy would make job hunting easier, reduce wasted time and effort, and contribute to a more honest and competitive job market. With stronger leadership and economic growth, we can improve hiring practices and help people like my brother and his friends find meaningful employment. If Trump wins, I hope this issue is addressed, and finding a job becomes more straightforward as the economy improves under new leadership, moving beyond the current administration’s struggles.
I encourage everyone reading this to support, vote, and “heart” this proposal so it can rise to the top and be seen by Bobby Kennedy Jr. and others. Together, we can push for policies that protect job seekers and ensure that companies act responsibly in the hiring process.
