Every American student should have a solid grasp of the concepts of the nation in which they live. This includes a fundamental understanding of the concept of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A first step in this could be the requirement that all high school students must have the understanding and ability to pass an American citizenship test.
This could help our youth understand the unique concepts on which our country was founded, and may foster adults who can debate ideas based on content instead of political party.
As far as I understand, most High Schools already require this for graduation (typically being called Civics or American Government). I suggest the problem isnβt the class existing or not, but rather student retention.
Maybe my idea should argue for reform instead of something new. The main idea is that the student taking a class like Civics would pass/fail based on their ability to pass the American Citizenship test. Passing that exam would be the guiding principle that could ensure a proper (non-woke biased) education, and appropriate retention.
But what history is taught?? My personal experience w/ High School boys as a Merit Badge Counselor clearly demonstrated that they had NOT covered any founding documents (DoI, Constitution w/ amendments, Federalist Papers, Anti-Federalists Papers) nor the writings of the Founders eg Thomas Paine, Jefferson, Adams.
