Adult Sized changing tables for Public Restrooms. (handicap bathroom changes)

Adult sized changing tables in public restrooms are overdue and necessary. The stat I have seen is that 1 out of 200 adults could use an adult sized changing table in handicapped bathrooms. Our current ADA laws have no provisions to include these for our adult handicapped population. Baby changing stations are too small and flimsy to support the weight of even the smallest adults. I propose that instead of putting in bathrooms for transgender people, we focus on the much larger population of handicapped people in the USA. Any new or remodeled bathrooms should make room for and contain an adult-sized changing tables. This would include enough room to fit a wheelchair, the person in the chair, and for at least 2 people to assist this person with their toileting/changing needs. Without these tables, handicap people are forced to be changed on the floors of public restrooms. (This is filthy and disgusting.) This would give dignity back to those of our population that cannot toilet or change themselves and allow caregivers many more options to offer care in public places.

I would also like to dedicate this law as Kira’s Law. This would be for my handicapped daughter that I have cared for and changed her entire life. She is now 22 and deserves to have a dignified place to be changed.

Reach out to the American Institute of Architects or AIA. They are the group that proposes changes like this in the design world and in building code requirements. They most likely don’t even know this is such a large concern and need it brought forward. Here is a link on how to contact them.

Thank you. I will contact them, but don’t believe it will be received. I have tried to contact my senate and representatives from both sides of the isle, and all have ignored this.

Fortitudine Vincimus!

I understand the frustration. Any building code change will go through architects and will be for new construction and or renovation projects. They won’t implement it into existing design/structures immediately. However this is a great start!

FYSA I sent a email as well. Good luck!
