Does sound like the plot of a thriller! It’s one I would rather just keep in the movies.
Policy for GPS Tagging and Monitoring of Medical Research Animals
There was a movie about this where they ended up fire bombing the city. We also just went through one gain of function pandemic. Let’s make sure there’s no accident on purpose starts of another.
1. Purpose
To ensure the safety and traceability of medical research animals, prevent the spread of potential contagions, and facilitate rapid response in case of an escape.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all medical research facilities using animals for research purposes.
3. GPS Tagging Requirements
- All research animals must be fitted with a GPS tracking device.
- The GPS device must be capable of real-time location tracking and have an alarm system that activates if the animal leaves the designated premises.
4. Alarm and Notification System
- An alarm must be triggered immediately if an animal leaves the premises.
- The alarm notification must be sent to a designated government agency equipped to handle potential contagions.
- The government agency must have the capability to respond within hours to capture and contain the animal.
5. Transportation Protocol
- If an animal needs to be transported off-premises, the alarm system must be deactivated by the government agency, not by the research facility.
- The government agency must be informed of the animal’s destination and the purpose of the transport.
- The animal’s GPS tag number and all relevant research data, including any gain-of-function research and exposure to viruses, must be provided to the government agency.
6. Data Management
- All research data related to the animal, including its exposure to viruses and any gain-of-function research, must be stored in a secure database.
- This data must be accessible to the government agency in case of an emergency.
7. Compliance and Enforcement
- Regular audits will be conducted to ensure compliance with this policy.
- Non-compliance may result in penalties, including suspension of research activities.
