There is so much talk about the social security trust fund running out of money. so, instead of just raising the retirement age and contribution levels, I think the number of work quarters to qualify should be increased. Right now, 40 quarters (10 years) seems low considering the increasing amount of time people spend in retirement. My proposal would be that starting in 2030, the number of working quarters increase by 4 (1 additional year for a total of 44 quarters) and that it increase by 4 quarters each 2 years - so by 2032, it would be up to 48 quarters to qualify.
