A private company would not be mandated to deliver six days a week to every address in America. With the decreased volume the USPS will never be profitable under this mandate from Congress. We should keep our postal service but allow them to actually manage it instead of Congress. Go to 3 day a week delivery like numerous other countries already have. Privatize it if we have too. The USPS must survive in whatever form.
I proposed the exact same thing back in December. Ultimately doing so would cut the workforce by a good amount, reduce the number of delivery vehicles (and associated maintenance), and for shippers that are sending parcels, they could pay a premium for off-day delivery.
I am totally in favor of cutting delivery to 3 days per week. It might need to be gradual in different areas as people retire and quit, but totally doable. We could even go to twice a week without a noticeable impact. We could even do 2 days one week and 3 the next so that no one delivers on Saturday. 2 people would share the same routes on alternate days. They should at least do a trial in some area of the country and see how it goes!!
