Why should there be any retirement benefits on a 10 - 12 year job serving their constituents? Once a Senator or Rep leaves Congress, there should be zero compensation or pay. These people work for us. If you leave your job, to take a new job or retire, does your first job continue paying you? Do they continue adding to your retirement account? Even in the days of generous corporate pensions, what did employees get after 10 - 12 years employment? (Not counting high ranking execs with their golden parachutes - that’s a another ridiculous topic)
Being in Government service does not mean that they get paid for life. Madison Cawthorn served two years, he does not get a retirement for life. It’s just like being in a government job. That rumor is not true. I’m a former government employee with combined military and federal service to total almost 22 years. I got to retire, medically or what they call “disabled“ but would not have been able to otherwise because I was too young and did not have enough time in service.
But I would not have been able to retire regularly and collect a salary… until I served X amount of time, or I hit what’s called an MRA or a minimum retirement age. Government servants in Congress are the same way.
