Have medical insurance companies provide tax documents showing the amount you paid out of pocket under medical insurance. Tax credits should be given for premium AND out of pocket expenses. This would make it easier to get medical expense credit AND lower the threshold for getting oop tax credit . With this tax method, people who elect lower premium plans would benefit when they experience unexpected high dollar oop expenses. I understand there is already a tax credit for having expenses over a specific percentage of your income. It would be much easier for the average perso.n to just submit a form from insurance and their w2, which already shows the premium paid. The one drawback would be people who dont actually pay their provider so I guess we would have to make it harder for people to include medical debt in bankruptcy.
