Both Republicans and Democrats are willing to engage in funding to secure our electronics supply chain security long term, notably with the CHIPS Act.
With legislation like the CHIPS Act, it doesn’t provide funding for auxiliary parts of the electronics industry such as expanding motherboard manufacturing capabilities, silicon packing technologies and the like. Currently, there are several points of failure in our global supply chain when it comes to making modern smartphones and laptops and more than just silicon resides in risk-prone areas of the world.
Current companies capable of providing domestic silicon manufacturing are Intel Foundry Services (IFS), GlobalFoundries, SkyWater Foundry, Micron Technology and Microchip Technology.
Intel is capable of providing silicon at such volume that would rapidly outpace domestic capabilities of producing motherboards, cases and heat sinks to put them in.
I will be responsive to any feedback to render a more coherent policy angle.
