Proposal: Protecting Consumers’ Right to Know Product Sourcing, Manufacturing, and Origin

WHEREAS, consumers have the fundamental right to make informed decisions regarding the products they purchase, and transparency in product sourcing, manufacturing, and origin is critical to enabling such informed choices; and

WHEREAS, knowing where products are sourced, manufactured, or made provides consumers with vital information regarding product safety, labor practices, environmental sustainability, and ethical standards of production; and

WHEREAS, clear and accurate labeling on products regarding their origins fosters consumer trust, encourages responsible corporate behavior, and promotes transparency in the global marketplace; and

WHEREAS, consumers have a growing interest in supporting local, domestic, and ethically sourced products, which can contribute to economic growth and sustainability within their own communities and nations; and

WHEREAS, many industries already provide transparency in product labeling, but inconsistent or insufficient information on product origins remains a challenge in various sectors, leading to confusion and undermining consumer confidence;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this legislative body affirms the consumer’s right to know where products are sourced, manufactured, or made; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that manufacturers, producers, and retailers to provide clear and accurate labeling on all consumer products, detailing the country of origin, location of manufacturing, and source of raw materials where applicable; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the adoption of federal and state legislation that mandates comprehensive transparency in product labeling, ensuring that consumers are fully informed about the products they buy; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that labeling products must sight an actual country of origin and labels such as globally sources is not permitted; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that labeling use Universal Product Code and country of origin is clearly identified ; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with such labeling requirements, including penalties for noncompliance, to protect the interests of consumers and foster a more transparent, ethical, and sustainable marketplace.


This proposal emphasizes the importance of transparency in product sourcing and manufacturing for the benefit of consumers and the wider economy.
